Historic Milestone: Moldova’s EU Candidate Status

On June 23, 2022, a historic moment was marked as the European Council (#EUCO) decided to grant EU candidate status to #Moldova. This decision, supported by all 27 EU leaders, signifies a crucial step forward on Moldova’s path towards EU membership. Alongside #Ukraine, Moldova now firmly belongs to the European Family.

The European Commission’s decision to grant Moldova candidate status comes with the understanding that a series of important reforms will need to be implemented across various sectors in the immediate future. These reforms aim to align Moldova’s institutions, policies, and practices with EU standards, paving the way for a deeper integration process.

At the end of June 2022, Veronica Crețu and Natalia Cucoș diaspora members based in Austria, launched the Moldova4Diaspora Task Force initiative to address the critical need for leveraging the expertise, connections, and resources of the Moldovan diaspora in supporting the country’s EU integration process. Since the launch of the call for members, up to 30 members from across the globe joined the initiative with other new expressions of interest on the way.

The initiative aims to bridge gaps in institutional capacity, foster knowledge-sharing across borders, and tackle systemic challenges in priority reform areas, all while strengthening the diaspora's role as key contributors and porta voce of Moldova’s development and international standing in their countries of residence.
